Owner Recommendation

C-41 Convenience

XP2 SUPER is the black-and-white film for people who do not want to think about black-and-white film development. It uses standard C-41 color processing — the same process used for every color negative film — which means you can drop it off at any minilab, drugstore, or photo counter on the planet and get back developed negatives ready to scan or print. But the convenience would not matter if the image quality were not there, and XP2 SUPER genuinely delivers: the grain is exceptionally fine for a 400-speed film, the sharpness is excellent, and the tonality — particularly in the highlights — has a smoothness that surprises even experienced black-and-white printers. Because XP2 forms its image using dye clouds rather than metallic silver, it scans beautifully on systems optimized for color negatives, including Digital ICE dust removal, which is a significant practical advantage for hybrid film/digital workflows. The film has enormous exposure latitude — you can rate it anywhere from ISO 50 to 800 on the same roll without changing development — making it an outstanding choice for cameras with limited or unreliable meters. We recommend XP2 SUPER for travelers who want the black-and-white look without the hassle of finding a specialty lab, for photographers experimenting with film for the first time, and for anyone who wants the creative experience of shooting black-and-white without the logistical overhead of traditional B&W processing. It is also one of the best films for scanning, period.
