Owner Recommendation

All-Rounder

Ultramax 400 is, pound for pound, the most versatile color negative film in the Kodak consumer lineup. At ISO 400 it sits in the speed sweet spot: fast enough to handhold through late afternoon into twilight, slow enough to shoot in bright sun without always reaching for an ND filter. The color palette is more saturated than Gold 200 — reds pop, blues have real depth, and yellows lean sun-drenched — but it never veers into cartoon territory the way some hyper-saturated slide films can. Grain is visible at 400 but pleasingly even, with a structure that feels organic rather than distracting. The real superpower of Ultramax is its exposure latitude: it handles overexposure with grace (two stops over looks bright and airy rather than blown out) and underexposure with surprising competence for a consumer film. This makes it an outstanding choice for cameras with unreliable meters, point-and-shoots with fixed shutter speeds, and anyone shooting in rapidly changing light conditions. We recommend Ultramax 400 as the one-film solution for travel: it will cover bright beaches, dim cathedrals, and everything in between without you needing to think about it. It is also our most-recommended film for parties, events, and anywhere flash is involved, because it balances ambient and strobe light beautifully.
