Owner Recommendation

Icon in 120

TRI-X on 120 format takes everything that makes the 35mm version legendary and elevates it to a level of refinement that has to be experienced to be believed. That famous grain structure, so integral to TRI-X's identity in 35mm, becomes a subtle texture on medium format — still unmistakably TRI-X, still full of character, but refined enough that a 6×7 negative can be printed to mural size without grain dominating the image. The tonality on the larger negative is breathtaking: midtones separate with a three-dimensional quality that makes portraits feel like you could reach into the frame, and the transition from highlight to shadow has a smoothness that no digital sensor has yet convincingly replicated. Street and documentary photographers who move to 120 TRI-X often describe it as a revelation — the same film they have loved for years, suddenly given room to express itself fully. We particularly recommend it for portrait work, where the combination of TRI-X's flattering skin tone rendition and medium format's shallow depth of field creates images of extraordinary presence and gravitas. If 35mm TRI-X is a great novel, 120 TRI-X is the same novel printed on fine paper and bound in leather. Both tell the same story, but one elevates the act of reading into something approaching ceremony.
