Owner Recommendation

The Standard

HP5 PLUS is the film against which all other 400-speed black-and-white films are measured, and it has held that position for decades through a combination of versatility, reliability, and sheer aesthetic quality that no competitor has quite managed to match. The grain is classic and present — not as fine as a modern Delta or T-grain emulsion, but beautifully structured in a way that adds texture and depth rather than distraction. The tonality is where HP5 truly excels: midtones separate with a richness that gives images a three-dimensional quality, shadows hold detail deep into the darkness, and highlights roll off with a smoothness that flatters every subject. Push it to 800 and the contrast increases tastefully without the grain exploding; push it to 1600 and you enter a world of atmospheric, urgent imagery that defined British documentary photography for a generation; push it to 3200 and HP5 somehow, against all reasonable expectations, still delivers usable images with a raw, elemental power. It is as comfortable in a Leica as it is in a Holga, as at home in the studio as it is on the street, and as suitable for a beginner's first roll of black-and-white as it is for a master printer's exhibition project. If you shoot only one black-and-white film for the rest of your life, HP5 PLUS is the one to choose — not because it is the best at any single thing, but because it is excellent at everything, and it will never, ever let you down.
