Owner Recommendation

Icon in 120

HP5 PLUS in 120 format is one of those rare combinations that feels almost unfair — a film already beloved for its versatility and character, rendered across a negative four times larger than its 35mm counterpart. The grain that gives HP5 its distinctive texture in 35mm becomes a fine, painterly quality on medium format: still identifiably HP5, still full of character, but with a refinement that makes even large prints feel intimate rather than aggressive. The tonality on the larger negative is simply gorgeous — midtones have a richness and depth that can make a simple portrait feel monumental, and the transition from highlight to shadow has a smoothness that large format photographers chase with much slower films. We particularly love HP5 120 for portrait work, where the flattering tonal curve and the shallow depth of field possible with medium format combine to create images of real presence. It is also an outstanding choice for handheld street and documentary work on TLR and rangefinder cameras — the 400 speed gives you the shutter speeds you need, while the larger negative gives you the image quality you want. If 35mm HP5 is the film you trust, 120 HP5 is the film you fall in love with.
