Owner Recommendation

Medium Format Color King

EKTAR 100 on 120 format is, quite simply, one of the most technically impressive combinations available to the film photographer today. Take a film that already delivers near-medium-format levels of detail in 35mm, spread it across a negative four times larger, and the result is resolution and color fidelity that rival what most digital cameras can produce at base ISO. The grain, already vanishingly fine at 35mm, essentially ceases to exist as a visible phenomenon at 6×7 — you will hit the resolution limit of your lens, your scanner, or your technique long before you hit the limit of the film. Landscapes shot on EKTAR 120 have a hyper-real quality that makes viewers stop and stare: every leaf, every cloud, every distant mountain ridge rendered with a clarity that feels almost supernatural. The larger negative also tames EKTAR's tendency toward high contrast, giving you slightly more forgiving tonality than the 35mm version while keeping all that legendary saturation. We recommend it for the photographer who wants to make large prints that reward close inspection — the kind of prints you hang on a wall and find new details in every time you walk past. It is also an outstanding choice for travel photography where you are only carrying a few rolls and want every single frame to count. If you own a medium format camera and have not yet put a roll of EKTAR through it, you are, frankly, leaving performance on the table.
