Owner Recommendation

Modern Workhorse

EKTAPAN 400 is Kodak's modern answer to the 400-speed black-and-white category — a film that delivers the speed and versatility of a classic documentary stock in a cleaner, finer-grained package. Where TRI-X leans into its grain as a aesthetic feature, EKTAPAN 400 manages it as a technical parameter to be minimized, and the result is a 400-speed film with grain characteristics closer to what you would expect from a traditional 100 or 200-speed stock. This makes it an excellent choice for photographers who need the flexibility of 400 speed — handheld shooting in variable light, faster shutter speeds for moving subjects — but do not want grain to be the dominant visual element in their images. The tonal curve is smooth and predictable, with a linear response that gives you a clean, neutral starting point for scanning and digital darkroom work. Shadows retain detail well at box speed, and the film pushes to 800 with only a moderate increase in contrast and grain. We recommend EKTAPAN 400 for documentary and travel photographers who want a reliable, high-quality 400-speed film without the strong period signature of a vintage stock. It is also an outstanding teaching film: predictable enough that beginners can diagnose their own mistakes easily, good enough that experienced photographers will not outgrow it.
