Owner Recommendation

Modern Versatility

DELTA 400 is what happens when ILFORD applies its most advanced T-grain emulsion technology to the 400-speed category, and the result is a film that redefines what you should expect from a medium-speed black-and-white stock. The grain is astonishingly fine for ISO 400 — you would swear you were looking at a traditional 100-speed film — yet the speed is genuine, giving you the shutter speeds you need for handheld photography in real-world lighting conditions. The tonal curve is modern and linear, producing clean, neutral negatives that scan beautifully and give you enormous flexibility in the digital darkroom. But do not mistake cleanliness for sterility: DELTA 400 has a luminous quality in the midtones that gives images a distinctive presence, and the shadow detail holds up remarkably well even in contrasty light. It pushes competently to 800 and 1600, though this is where the T-grain character really asserts itself — pushed DELTA 400 has a different look from pushed HP5, sharper and more clinical, which you may or may not prefer depending on your aesthetic goals. We recommend DELTA 400 for photographers who want the speed of a 400 film with the grain of a 100 film, and for anyone who prioritizes technical image quality in their black-and-white work. It is especially well-suited to scanning workflows where maximum information capture is more important than vintage character.
